Pro Bono: The Difference is You!
The Need in Texas
Each year, legal aid organizations are forced to turn away half of all qualified applicants; there simply are not enough resources to meet the need. Through the efforts of legal aid, combined with attorneys willing to handle cases pro bono, about 100,000 low-income Texans are helped each year. But there is so much more to be done.
More attorneys are needed to handle the demand for legal assistance. With only 400 paid legal aid attorneys in Texas, a significant step in solving this dilemma is pro bono.
Get involved
The State Bar of Texas encourages attorneys to allocate 50 hours per year to providing free legal assistance to the poor. Based on a nationwide study, the majority of attorneys who are doing pro bono work do so out of a sense of professional duty, the satisfaction derived from the work, and a recognition of the needs of the poor.
"The things you are able to do through legal aid are the things you will look back on at the end of your career with great pride, and you know you have made a real difference in the lives of human beings."
--Attorney Anne Shuttee, Corporate Attorney, EDS
